Marsannay

Marsannay

Marsannay, the youngest appellation of the Cote-de Nuits, is also considered the “golden gate”, both geographically and metaphorically to the great wines of Burgundy. Just south of Dijon, and covering the communes of Marsannay-La-Cote, Chenove and Couchey, this village has been a force in wine production history since the middle ages. Records show that both the Abbots of Beze and the Dukes of Burgundy were proud owners of vineyards in the town.

Despite the youth of it’s official recognition as AOC, and the fact that there are no Premier Cru sites in the village, the vineyards of Marsannay are studded with more than 50, “lieu dits”, individual sites, recognizable by name and separated by a road or a wall and carrying a history of great prestige and quality.

The “lieu dit” Champs Perdrix, in the South West corner of the appellation, bordering the village of Fixin, is considered one areas best vineyards.

Among the fifteen growers that share Champs Perdrix, Geantet-Pansiot is one of our favourites. Domaine Geantet-Pansiot was founded in 1954 when Edmond Geantet married Bernadette Pansiot. Settling in the village of Gevrey, they started to work on and expand their vineyards over the Gevrey-Chambertin and Bourgogne appellations. In 1977 Edmond’s son, Vincent joined the family business and brought a more modern, technical point of view to winemaking with his father who still farmed in a traditional fashion. Now the domaine is in the third generation with the addition of Vincent’s son, Fabien as wine maker.

Geantet-Pansiot’s wine making style is typically based on sustainable farming, fermenting with indigenous yeast, and a very limited use of new oak. The results? Wines of pure pleasure.
